Blog Icon Chitika Update For Using Google Adsense as Alternate Ads

Posted in Affiliate News by Dave on June 2nd, 2009

In the past I’ve blogged about Using Chitika Premium and Adsense to Create Multiple Revenue Streams and how effective it is to use Google Adsense as the alternate to Chitika Premium. For anyone else who has been exercising this strategy, there’s still no issues with combining the two on a page, it’s just once again - Google in all their inimitable wisdom - has decided to make changes to the way Adsense units are served, once again causing webmasters unnecessary work. Here’s the update from Chitika in case you haven’t seen it…

blockquote We are sending you this email because it looks like you are using AdSense as an alternate ad in at least one of your Chitika ads.

Because of a change that Google made to how AdSense is served, you will need to make a quick change to your alternate ad setup to ensure that it will display correctly.

HERE IS WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO MAKE SURE YOUR ADSENSE ALTERNATE AD SERVES CORRECTLY:

1. Open the .HTML file that contains your AdSense code with Notepad or any other text editor.
2. Place <html><head></head><body> before your AdSense code and </body></html> after the code - for example:
<html><head></head><body>
<!–ADSENSE CODE GOES HERE –>
</body></html>

This will ensure that your AdSense alternate URL will display properly. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us directly, leave a comment on our blog post about this, or post in our forums.

Best Regards,
The Chitika Team

If you’re still holding out on mixing Adsense with Chitika and you’re watching your Adsense eCPM go down faster than the Titanic, click the Chitika banner below and read the article I linked to at the beginning of this post and try a benchmark test for yourself.

Blog Icon California Assembly Bill 178 - Could it Set Precedent for an Affiliate Tax?

Posted in Affiliate News by Dave on March 23rd, 2009

Affiliate TaxIt’s a sign of troubled economic times. Politicians everywhere around the US are searching high and low for new and innovative sources of taxation to balance their budgets and offset their deficits. While this “innovative legislation” may seem well intentioned, especially when claims of millions of dollars in tax revenues are at stake, the real truth is you can’t just indiscriminately take money from one place and give to another without causing harm to somebody in the middle.

It’s no suprise that several affiliate marketing industry leaders have been blogging about upcoming California Assembly Bill 178 which could have dire consequences for the affiliate marketing industry as well as for internet retailers :

blockquote California has a pending bill, copying a similar one in New York, unfairly categorizing publishers as sales presence for out-of-state advertisers. This means taxes will be levied on out-of-state advertisers, potentially causing them to shut down their publisher relationships in the state (it happened in New York).

The Performance Marketing Alliance is leading the fight against this bill which threatens to set precedent for several other states if California allows it to move forward.

Linda Buquet at 5 Star Affiliate Blogs posted an urgent update regarding Bill SF 282 already on the books in the state of Minnesota which has made it to the Senate level with a hearing scheduled for this week. Connecticut, Hawaii and Tennessee also have similar sales tax legislation pending and it would seem logical that other states will not follow far behind in the cash grab.

Last year I was not just taken back, I was completely dumbfounded when I read about the “Amazon Tax” bill that had been proposed in New York. Many called the portion of the tax bill specifically targeting affiliate marketers unconstitutional but it struck me as bizzare that lawmakers could be so reckless :

blockquote Specifically, the new law says that a retailer must collect sales tax from residents if any New York-based web site earns referral payments from Amazon (by running ads for Amazon on their web sites, by offering Amazon product referral links, or by being an Amazon affiliate). According to the statute, Amazon would need to collect sales tax on every purchase made by a New York resident through the site, regardless of whether it was bought from a New York-based affiliate.

Take a scenario where an internet user in New York visits a New york based Amazon affiliate’s site, clicks a link to amazon and buys something !!

Could this short sighted legislation potentially set precedent for other states? Unless one of your state representatives has an Amazon Associates account and know how to build landing pages, affiliate marketers everywhere should take notice of this legislation and write your state and local representatives expressing your fear that similar legislation may be on the books in your state. You can find your representatives at house.gov.

Although this subject is no laughing matter, it might leave you with a smirk on your face to know that this legislation was first proposed by former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer who resigned his post after a federal wiretap caught him with a $1000 per hour call girl.

Blog Icon Convert2Media Cutting Referrals Down To 2%

Posted in Affiliate News by Dave on March 3rd, 2009

The message came across my Twitter a few minutes ago from Convert2Media that they would be cutting referral commissions down to 2% and there was more information avaiable at the official Convert2Media blog.

Ruck says…

blockquote In the specific case of Convert2Media while it may not sit well with you now, after the changes that are made in the near future we know it will make 99% of the publisher base happy. Knowing you cannot satisfy everyone in this business calls for a set of balls some dont seem to have when making decisions. The ramifications of bad press from people who do not work with Convert2Media is meaningless. I’ve never been one to give a shit what others thought. If I did, I probably would have never came online in the first place.

See the full post here. As usual, there’s several tidbits of information in Ruck’s lengthy post that all affiliate marketers should be aware particularly issues regarding affiliate networks and referring other marketers as a source of residual earnings. Even though the latter is one of my staples, the reduction to 2% doesn’t bother me in the least bit considering half of the programs I’ve referred people into pay squat for the efforts.

I’ve only recently joined Convert2Media and haven’t run any significant campaigns through them but I like what I see already and it’s not just because they’re an hour away from me in Central Florida.

If you haven’t joined Convert2Media and checked out what they have to offer :

Blog Icon Review of Pepperjam Store Builder

Posted in Affiliate News by Dave on October 23rd, 2008

If you’ve ever wished you could build an online affiliate store easily, without having to mess with coding, product feeds or maintaining virtual inventory, your wish has just been granted by the magicians at Pepperjam Network. In their quest to put the best tools in their affiliate publisher’s hands, Pepperjam Network sent out an update announcing the beta launch of their newest monetization tool, “Pepperjam Store Builder”…

blockquote We are excited to announce the official BETA launch of our next generation product feed technology called Pepperjam Store Builder™, which is available exclusively through Pepperjam Network for FREE to all advertisers and affiliates. Can’t wait any longer to see Pepperjam Store Builder™ log-in HERE.

Pepperjam Store Builder™ allows you to quickly and easily manipulate Pepperjam Network product feeds in real-time to build product storefronts on your Web site. You can use Pepperjam Store Builder™ to easily link to specific products, create dedicated product feed Web sites, supplement your existing content or blog, add additional value to your coupon or incentive site, or for just about anything else your imagination will allow.

With Pepperjam Store Builder™ you have access to millions of products from hundreds of Pepperjam Network advertisers. You can automatically create storefronts by selecting any combination of merchants, categories, or keywords. The more merchants and / or categories you select the more products that will be available to your Web site visitors. However, you may also choose to use the Pepperjam Store Builder™ search filter to refine your search to a specific kind or type of product. For instance, you may select CostumeKingdom.com as your merchant, but only want to display “pumpkin” costumes. No problem! Simply use the search filter and type in “pumpkin” to refine the feed to show only the products you want.

You want to know what’s even cooler? Creating a feed is so easy that you can build a storefront for virtually anything in less than 30 seconds and we’ll even show you a LIVE Demo as your building it! All you have to do is create your storefront, copy a small amount of code into your Web site, and voila - you have a fully functional product feed storefront.

Take a look at the screenshot below of Pepperjam Store Builder™. To get working with Pepperjam Store Builder™ immediately simply log-in to your account at www.pepperjamnetwork.com and start generating some feeds.

I have to admit that I was very eager to test this new tool out, so I logged into my Pepperjam Network account and took the PJNSB for a test drive. Within 5 minutes, I had a basic store built and within a half an hour of experimenting with the tool, I was beginning to see the unlimited potental that this tool releases. If you want to see a functional example store I created within a half an hour (including graphics and CSS layout), click the following link : Gift Ideas - Music Boxes

The Store Builder allows publishers to select merchant programs to build links from, you can then select specific categories from the merchant’s stores and then you can filter the results to get only the products you’re looking to display. The output is fully customizable to match your website and you can even add a search box that will allow visitor to your site to search your chosen merchants catalogs and it will display the results to them with your affiliate links in the output. How cool is that? Here’s a glimpse of the Store Builder interface…

The only thing I see that is missing from the Store Builder is the ability to add an SID for tracking purposes but hopefully Pepperjam will add that to the interface asap.

One specific tip I will give you for creating an extensive store using this tool is that you might want to create mini-stores for each page of your site with minimal amounts of items. This will allow you to create multiple pages where you can do some SEO work and add appropriate keywords for each page because the Store Builder works with JavaScript and the output will not be picked up by search engines as content on your pages.

Overall, the Pepperjam Store Builder functions flawlessly and Pepperjam deserves a thumbs up for rolling out a beta release that is not full of bugs and issues. As with everything PJN does, a lot of thought was put into this release and they are really trying to put quality tools into publisher’s hands to help PJN affilaites monetize their sites to their fullest potential.

Compared to Amazon’s store builder and other tools that operate similarly, the Pepperjam Store Builder beats them all hands down. I’m sure both affiliate and merchants alike will benefit from this fantastic tool. Just think of all the ways that it can implemented, the possibilites are limitless. I could see it being used to create custom sidebars with products, custom banner ads, mini-stores and full blown stores.

If you’re not already a Pepperjam affiliate, what are you waiting for? Click the banner below to get started today !!
