A discussion of earning with Affiliate Programs, SEO, Wordpress Blogging and General Motivational Ideas for Internet Publishers

Blog Post WidgetBucks improves MerchSense algorithm to help publishers earn Higher Yields

Earn $$ with WidgetBucks! The ever popular affiliate program WidgetBucks has announced today that they are tweaking their Merchsense algorithm to generate higher yield for publishers who are running the hybrid CPM display ad/PPC widget combination. The Merchsense program is currently open only to United States and Canada publishers but it seems like an effective way to combine CPM with CPC in one ad unit.

The WidgetBucks Merchsense concept is similar to a publisher utilizing a CPM (where publishers are paid per 1000 banner impressions) with a back-up CPC (where publishers are paid per visitor click). If a fill rate is not reached in the CPM and their is no banner to show, the ad fails over to the CPC ad (or any other ad that a publisher has set as a backup). The significant difference with WidgetBucks concept is that you don’t have to use two affiliate programs (for tracking alone, it’s a timesaver) and that publishers essentially have two ways to earn from one ad spot.

In the first case scenario, if your CPM program shows a banner and your visitor is not interested, that ad spot is shorted. If your CPM network doesn’t have an ad to fill the spot and instead fills it with your PPC ad and a visitor doesn’t click. You’ve earned nothing. However, with WidgetBucks MerchSense, your visitor is shown the CPM ad for a short period of time and then the regular CPC ads wil show. If a CPM ad is shown, you earn. If the visitor is still on your page when the CPC ads load and clicks one of them, you earn two times. Once for the CPM the visitor was shown and once for the CPC ad the visitor clicked !!

Here’s a bit from the official WidgetBucks blog:

blockquote Behind the scenes at WidgetBucks we’ve been working to improve MerchSense, our contextual algorithm. One way we’re doing this is by implementing YieldSense(tm), which is technology that automatically generates the highest possible yield for publisher ad placements, and we’re nearly ready to publish the first phase of these improvements. Starting as early as this weekend or Monday, U.S. and Canada visitors on sites that are running MerchSense will begin seeing short-duration display advertising running before WidgetBucks’ traditional shopping widgets. This hybrid CPM display ad/PPC shopping widget combination is intended to help improve effective CPM (eCPM), while maintaining a great e-commerce experience through our widgets.
