Blog Post Targeting Relevant Adsense Ads for Forum Owners

Posted in Google Adsense, Search Engine Optimization by Dave on the February 6th, 2008

Here’s a follow-up on my post yesterday about Google Adsense Section Targeting. I’ve been testing it out on one of my most active forums where I’ve been experiencing dificulty getting relevant targeted Adsense ads related to the thread or folder content. It seemed the majority of the Adsense ads showing inside threads and folders were irrelevant despite optimization of the dynamic page’s title, meta keywords and on-page keywords. Irrelevant ads mean less clicks which translates to less earnings for ads taking up valuable space.

The question of “how to most effectively target content sections for relevant ads”, I decided a good strategy would be to wrap the Adsense Section Targeting code around the most concise area of keywords for each page on my forum. That area would be the “linktree”, the area of the forum that looks like this…

linktree

Forums and blogs have a tendency get indexed more frequently than static sites because of the constantly changing content, so I figured the linktree would be the most logical area that would have the most relevant keywords I’d want to target. I wrapped that area with the Google code and I was suprised how quickly the changes took effect and how my forum threads and folders are now getting perfectly targeted ads. I have to hand it to the team on this modification and I believe will be a big plus for advertisers especially when their ads are being displayed on a dynamic content site.

Blog Post Google PageRank Update 2008-Q1

Posted in Search Engine Optimization by Dave on the January 12th, 2008

It appears Google is in the process of it’s Q1-2008 Pagerank update. There’s quite a few threads on the webmaster and SEO forums indicating the changes in this update are nearing completion. I have mixed emotions with this update as my Pagerank on this blog just dropped to 3 from 4 and since the last update I’ve only added numerous quality backlinks. I’m not sure exactly what Google has up it’s sleeve but it seems the majority of webmasters are itching for a new website rating system and to get away from Google pagerank as a rating system for a sites advertising value. Alexa ranking doesn’t seem to be a viable option because Alexa is anything but dynamic, however two services to look at are Quantcast and Compete. Although the afformationed entities are not search engines, they are extremely accurate traffic measurment services.

So, how did your sites fare in this latest update? Please leave a comment with your details and remember, this is a “” blog so you’re comments will be not only appreciated, they will get some “link love”.

Blog Post Webhosting and SEO - Choosing the Right Host

Posted in Tips & Tricks, Search Engine Optimization, Web Hosting Reviews by Dave on the November 7th, 2007

Web HostingOne of the most critical and often overlooked of components an effective (Search Engine Optimization) campaign is web hosting. While it may not be the first thing that comes to mind, it’s imperative to remember that search engine spiders such as the can access your site at any time and if your website is down or not responding properly, it can have a dramatic effect on the way your site is indexed or represented in the search engine results. Finding a reliable and cost-effective webhosting provider can be a daunting task when considering the myriad of available options. That’s where a website such as WebHostingChoice.com can make all the difference in assisting potential webhosting customers to choose a provider that meets their needs. WebHostingChoice.com is a searchable directory of webhosting companies that allows you to search for providers based on several criteria and features such as Monthly Cost, Setup Fee, Diskspace, Bandwidth, User Rating, Scripting Languages, Database and much more. Below is a screenshot of the “Advanced Search” page listing the wide array of search criteria available to the end user:

Considering my background in , having started my first company in 1993, which I sold in 1996 and having been around the business for the better part of 15 years, I’m quite impressed with the comprehensive data represented by WebHostingChoice.com in their directory and search engine. All of the major providers I’ve worked with or heard of are listed in the directory and the data is up to date and accurate.

Additionally, Web Hosting Choice features human feedback in the form of user reviews and ratings that can be essential in making the mission critical decision of where to host your business or personal site. In my opinion, user reviews are a tremendous help when choosing a product or service and can serve to help you avoid the pitfalls of getting stuck in a service contract with a company who doesn’t provide adequate support or live up to their claims. User reviews can also send a positive message about a product or service and help steer consumers in the right direction. This is why I truly appreciate websites that offer comparison shopping with unsolicited feedback.

Don’t find out the hard way that your SEO campaign can be botched by choosing the wrong hosting provider. Make an educated decision based on factual information and always look before you leap.

Dave

Blog Post Obtaining .edu and .gov Backlinks

Posted in Search Engine Optimization, Google Search by Dave on the November 1st, 2007

Here’s a little trick for anybody looking for .edu or .gov . There might be easier ways to get links from these highly coveted sites, such as buying links but if youre willing to put a little effort into it and not abuse this trick, you’ll find it a rewarding experience. To start, many .edu and .gov sites have blog and allow comments on the blogs. Please remember to respect the blog owners and DO NOT SPAM them as you will only ruin the internet experience and spammers suck in general. Here’s how to find the blogs using a simple search :

A basic Google search using the following search criteria will show you the blogs you will be looking for :

Search for .edu domains with a blog relative to your website’s keywords

site:.edu inurl:blog “your keyword(s)”

Search for .gov domains with a blog relative to your website keywords

site:.gov inurl:blog “your keyword(s)”

Enter your relative keywords where the phrase keyword “your keyword(s)” appears and you will see numerous blogs with those .edu extensions appear. Contrarily, if you substitute .gov for the .edu and you will find the sites with .gov extensions.

PLEASE NOTE: When commenting on a blog post within these blogs DO NOT SPAM irrelevant comments just to get your link on the blog. This purpose of this post is merely to point out an effective method of finding .edu and .gov blogs using a simple Google search.Any and all comments that you leave on the blogs you find should be on topic and should be relevant comments with your url entered only where it allows. Please be aware that .edu and .gov domains usually have quite strict policies regarding comments left on their blogs, so please, as with any blog, DO NOT SPAM for the sake of a backlink or you will find your efforts futile.

Kudos to Cbarker,ws - Resonate Equilibrium for the concept and search string information.

Happy Publishing,
Dave
