Blog Icon Worst Website Ever

Posted in Things to Avoid, Soapbox Rants, Worst Website Ever by Dave on August 23rd, 2007

Time Magazinr CoverHello to all my fellow internet publishers, bloggers, White Hat SEO gurus and webmasters. If you’re like me, every once in a while, your brain just starts to go into a virtual meltdown caused by the quagmyie that is known as the internet. Between endless hours spent promoting, , reading, writing and making yourself sick over it all, there’s always that wonderful moment where you just start clicking things you normally wouldn’t just because your looking for an escape key. That’s when the fun begins.

Once again it has happened to me, I’d been up all night handling a press release for one of my new sites. I used several free and paid press release services in an effort to derive a comprehensive series of blog articles regarding these services. So, I was checking Google News to see if my release was getting disseminated as promised by one of the paid press release services I used and something caught my eye. Something so sinister, so disgusting, yet somewhat appealing to my half baked cerebreal system that I did the unthinkable. I clicked on a link to a Time/CNN article entitled 25 Sites We Can’t Live Without.

Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not like I’m opinionated (yeah right), but “” has to be one of the biggest piles of trash ever to be published. Time Magazine exists to occupy coffee table space in waiting rooms and as an alternative to toilet paper in public restrooms. As for CNN, to call their network a credible “news source” would be blasphemous, not unlike it’s counterpart MSNBC, the medium borderlines on regurgitated hype and sensationalism disguised as current events to sell advertising. Why I clicked on that link, I don’t know? Maybe it was a desire to torture myself into fits of writhing agony over poorly written content littered with advertising that is indiscernable from the content that’s meant to sell it. Time/ viewers and readers are pathetic junkies on the information streetcorner, looking for a pusher to deal them a quick fix, fully knowing they’ll be right back the next day. They never take the time to check if the “junk” is good, they just boot it into their veins and go off into an escape of reality, blissfully ignorant to the world around them.

This particular article set me on fire. First off because they didn’t list the 25 Sites We Can’t Live Without from an easy to navigate index page. These mindless trolls created the article as a series of 25 individual pages which they expect you to navigate through by clicking a “next” button at the bottom of each page. I made it through the first two pages which were Amazon.com and BBC.co.uk, no comment on either of those two websites. When I saw the next site on the list was the entirely scraped from other sources, unreliable, fountain of mis-information, veritable cornucopia of dead end listings known as Citysearch.com, I immediately hit the link to the 5 Worst Websites because I saw the lead-in stating “MySpace and Second Life get two thumbs down”. By this time, I was already drunk on click happiness, gleefully clicking to see how and why Time/CNN who are owned by were going to humiliate as one of the worst sites.

Quoted from the article, and I kid you not…

It seems the community has become infested with marketers and other opportunists who create false profiles and essentially spam other users, all under the guise of “making friends.” Of course, there have always been loads of MySpace profiles of fictional characters, created to help market a movie or promote some other brand. But it’s the bait-and-switch tactics from these leeches (Want to be my friend? Buy a ring tone! Fill out this survey!) that have taken things to a whole new—and sad—level.

After reading this, I almost had a seizure from laughing so hard. Go figure, opportunists, I guess that doesn’t apply to “baiting” people into a 25 Sites We Can’t Live Without article only to force them to click through each and every article due to the lack of an index. Done on purpose (and they’re not the first to pull this shady trick, the cauldron of crap, pcworld.com beat them to the punch with their similar article). Did I forget to mention, Time/CNN didn’t even put a release date anywhere on the article ? Is this journalism?

Biggest props go to the guy in the comments section, who unlike the rest of the trolls were posting their own website links, posted this…

OK, you can include yourself among the worst 5 websites! The sentence above says “You’ve clicked through thru TIME’s picks for the 50 best websites. Well, actually no I haven’t yet. I’m clicking around trying to find the list at one glance rather than the way you present it. Also, at the end of the worst 5 sites, where is the back button that gets me to the starting point? Same from this submit page, how to I get back to the head page for the top 50? No navigation for it……!

Seems Joe and I think a lot alike. I tip my hat at people with enough common sense to see through the shuffle.

Now, prepare yourself as I ask a favour of you. First, put on your crash helmet and bulletproof vest and get ready to go check this travesty of reckless publishing that rips, rapes, trashes and defiles all that we as independent publishers and bloggers strive for. Take note of how I have linked to it below.

Worst Website Ever

The very search engines we strive to get rankings in only to fall behind entities such as Time/CNN who always get first billing can be used to turn the tables upon them. If each and every blogger who reads this article, passes it along and we all link to Time/CNN’s 25 Sites We Can’t Live Without using the anchor text “Worst Website Ever”, add it to our blogrolls, we can give this dungheap the SERP’s it deserves. As the Nike slogan states “Just do it”, and remember there’s strength in numbers.

Peace Everybody !!

Blog Icon Where is John Chow ?

Posted in Google Search, Motivational, Things to Avoid by Dave on August 8th, 2007

John Chow Many bloggers are aware of the self-proclaimed online marketing guru and his "stop at nothing" blogging tactics. The tagline on his blog : Dot Com Mogul John Chow teaches blogger how to make money online by turning their blog into a money making machine. Although John Chow’s blog rates amongst the highest trafficed websites and has an Alexa Ranking in the top 3000, suprisingly, a search of Google for his name does not yield a single result for his site JohnChow.com which, incedentally, is the first listing in every other major search engine if you search for his name. Does this mean the folks at Google are blacklisting Chow by removing his site entirely from their index because he did something that angered the Google Gods? What is it that caused his fall from top rankings in Google while he has still been maintaining presence in the other major search engines?

Go back in time to December 2006 when John Chow started a very aggressive linking campaign in which he offered fellow bloggers a backlink from his blog in exchange for a review of his blog that included a link to Chow’s blog with the anchor text "make money online". While this in itself doesn’t seem to be anything more than a clever strategy to build backlinks, evidently Google did not think it was so creative. Other well known bloggers such as Darren Rowse of fame and Jeremy Schoemaker of are well known for their "" techniques and their similar approach as John Chow. Each one has shown pictures of paychecks they have earned from blogging which is essentially an old MLM trick (show the people the checks and they’ll follow you down any dark alley) which I personally find to be a shady business practice and just tacky. All three bloggers have been known for encouraging readers to add them to their Technorati favorites which boosts their Technorati ranking and adds to their blog’s valuation for on-site advertising. See the Advertise on ProBlogger page where they openly state "ProBlogger.net has become synonymous with making money through blogging and has grown a loyal and influential readership." and openly cites the blog being in the Top 10 on Technorati’s Favorites page and being in the Top 50 of Technorati’s Most Popular page. Does this really matter to potential advertisers? Do claims such as 25000+ daily RSS readers, a Google of 6 or an Alexa Ranking in the top 3000 really increase the value of an advertisment on a blog or website? Sure they do and anybody who thinks otherwise is in the dark. Does that mean the advertising dollar will be worthwhile? Probably not. Anybody with a background in advertising knows that high priced advertising slots are merely for "Brand Recognition" which is the reason the big corporate firms compete for slots on television during the Superbowl. It doesn’t mean they will necessarily sell more product, but it does implant a seed in the subconscious of the general public that the company is a leader in the field. On the internet, high visibility doesn’t translate into sales, conversions or guarantee desirable clicks. While the approaches of the three bloggers mentioned may differ at various junctures, the end result is the same, increase PageRank, visibility and viability to pump up advertising revenue.

Recently, Google announced a crackdown on buying and selling text links to pass PageRank, which essentially put a dent into the services provided by sites such as Text-Link-Ads. The impact was also felt by John Chow. While John’s own site doesn’t show up in the first several pages of Google search numerous others have been quick to profit from his misfortune. Here’s a snapshot of Google results for the search term "John chow"

Chow Google

The blogging community is divided on the subject of the battle between Google and John Chow. Some claiming what John Chow is/was doing to be wrong, while others claiming Google’s behaviour to be unethical. I personally find it humourous that paid sponsor links are appearing in AdWords targeting a blogger who has been already rebuked for using questionable marketing tactics. Seems like an oxymoron to me especially when Google themselves are the biggest purveyors of text link ads on the internet. Google’s Matt Cutts is quick to defend Google’s text link sales through AdWords as exclusively for advertising value and not to pass the coveted PageRank but who needs PageRank if your site is coming up first in Google’s listings because you paid for it to be there? It seems like pretzel logic to me or possibly a hint that Google would rather keep webmasters from making any profit that doesn’t involve them. I am a big fan of Google as a company, all the services they offer and I happily run AdSense ads on my sites. The only complaint I have is with Adsense, often times I’ve seen questionable AdSense ads displayed on my sites such as ones from pyramid or ponzi scheme programs who targeted keywords such as affiliate, marketing, etc. For example, the following ad has been running in the AdSense on this site for the last few days…

Padsense screenshot

This is obviously for a pyramid scheme… I feel if Google is to hold bloggers or webmasters such as John Chow accountable for the content (or links) on their websites, they should also be a little more responsible for KYC () and TIA (). As a publisher, I have no control over what is displayed through AdSense. However, if Google is going to take the time to single out and make an example of a blogger such as John Chow for agressive linkbuilding and sleazy marketing practices, they should also take the time to check out their advertisers. This applies especially when they are placing and profiting from questionable advertisments on third-party websites that may or may not lead to consumers becoming the victims of fraudulent internet schemes.

While the whole John Chow affair is probably meant to be an example to other publishers regarding integrity and compliance with guidelines set by Google, my personal opinion is that two wrongs don’t make a right. John Chow is well known for openly stating "Dont put your eggs in one basket" and it is very clear that regardless of his annoying and obnoxious approach to business, he is right about that one particular business ethic. Any entity that has such a large share of a public commodity (such as internet searches), who takes matters to a personal level and purposely sabotages another entity becomes potetentially hazardous to do business with for everyone. Especially when they take advertising dollars from other, even sleazier entities who are seeking to exploit the situation for their own personal gain.

Let this be a lesson well learned by the blogging community. . Your lives are insignificant. Only Google’s guidelines matter. Throw away your Bible, boot up your internet browser (preferrably Firefox) and whisper a prayer on bended knee in hope that one day you don’t come under the microscopic eye of the almighty.

…and in the meantime, while you’re waiting for the , just remember the eleventh commandment : Don’t be a John Chow.

Blog Icon SubmitExpress - Free is Never Free

Posted in Things to Avoid by Dave on July 11th, 2007

SubmitExpress.com offers “Free Submission to 40+ Search Engines” at the click of a mouse. While it seems to be a free service with the primary intention to help out new webmasters in hopes they will opt to purchase Submit Express more advanced service at a charge. The truth is these people are nothing but the biggest spammers, although they are not sending spam for low priced Viagra, best prices on high end wrist watches, or for porn sites, the cold, hard, truth is they send so much IT and SEO based spam that it would drive any webmaster who has ever used their services crazy.

You’ll get non-stop spam email from WebProNews, TheDevWeb, SiteSeer, and a never ending barrage of spam from a variety of domains they have, that provide duplicate content any webmaster can find easily on the web through the normal SEO channels. Yes, you can attempt to unsubscribe your email address thhrough their “opt-out” site iEntry (ientryMail.com), but they will continue to distribute your email address and eventually over the course of a few years of having the same email address, you will continually find yourself victim of their unsolicited email from every new domain they launch, all because you used their quick and easy free search engine submission service.

If you’re a fledgling webmaster, do yourself a favour and avoid any of these “free submission” services, and if you are so inclined to do so, use an email address you don’t care about. And the honest truth is that their submission service is worthless, so why bother.
