Blog Post More Wordpress Plugins and Where to Find Them

Posted in Wordpress Plugins by Dave on the December 24th, 2007

Wordpress Logo Wordpress is the most popular blogging software for domain based blogs. While Blogger and Blogspot still encompass the vast majority of blogs on the internet, both of the afformentioned free services are too cluttered with spammy blogs and blogs that have no direction or meaning. In fact, if you’d read my previous post about blocking Blogspot and Blogger url’s in your installs comment blacklist you can rest assured that one of the most important facets of maintaining a truly professionaly blog is to spend the few dollars per month to have a domain hosted blog on the Wordpress platform.

POne of the greatest things about Wordpress is the availability of numerous and hacks developed by third party programmers which makes Wordpress as essential to the intrinsic development of the internet as much as the Linux operating system has contributed to this wonderful world known as the internet. The best part about Wordpress is the widedspread availability of plugins to entend the basic softwares functionality and the fact that they’re all free and open source which means anybody with a basic level of PHP programming skills can alter, edit, modify and enhance not only the basic Wordpress software, but the plugins as well. Truly extensible software is a staple of the professional “open source” development community ever since the publication of legendary Eric S Raymond work, The Cathedral and the Bazzar.

Enough said on “open source” and the strength of Wordpress blogging platform, so without further ado, on to the title of this post…

Wordpress Plugins and Where to Find Them

#1 - The Wordpress Plugin Directory (http://dev.wp-plugins.org/) - This is the official Wordpress Plugin Repository and the goal is to provide a rich environment for developers to create and share their work on WordPress-related plugin development.

#2 - Alex King’s Wordpress Plugins (http://alexking.org/projects/wordpress) - Some of the finest Wordpress Plugins you’ll ever find on the internet. I’ve been using several of Alex’s plugins since my first forray into Wordpress blogging.

#3 - Colloquium has a great blog post Thirteen “Lesser Known” Helpful WordPress Plugins that lists some very helpful plugins that are often overlooked.

#4 - This one is not for the faint of heart but Lincoln Adams has a huge list of Plugins Gone Wild!. It’s an incredible list of Wordpress plugins.

#5 - Rounding out the list is the quintessential blogger Andy Beard with his entry on Ultimate List of DoFollow & Nofollow Plugins - Banish Nofollow From Comments and Trackbacks which culminates all the greatest dofollow and nofollow plugins available on the internet.

If that’s not enough plugins to satisfy your hunger for Wordpress extensiblity, here’s a few more links to plugins I’m using here on this blog.

As usual, have fun with these links !!!
Cheers,
Dave

Blog Post Wordpress Plugin - Recent Comments

Posted in Wordpress, Wordpress Plugins by Dave on the November 17th, 2007

Wordpress LogoI’ve just downloaded and installed Krischan Jodies fantastic WordPress Plugin: Get Recent Comments, you can see in action at the bottom of the blog here. The plugin displays excerpts of the latest comments and/or trackbacks to your blog. Although the common installation is to place the plugin as a widget on your blog’s sidebar, I added it as raw PHP code to the footer of my Wordpress template. I am very impressed with this plugin’s flexibility and with the admin tools that it installs in your Wordpress dashboard. You have fully comprehensive and complete control over the appearance which ranges from the number of comments, the length of the excerpts up to the actual Html and CSS layout.

Here’s the features on the plugin from the Wordpress site :

blockquote Feature List

* Highly configurable via WordPress admin interface.
* Support for WordPress 1.5, 2.0, 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3
* Adjustable layout by macros.
* Handles trackbacks and comments in separate lists, or in one combined list.
* Widget support
* Caches the output
* Order comments by date, or by posting
* Support for gravatars.
* Option to exclude comments to posts in certain categorys
* Doesn’t show pingbacks originating from own blog
* There is a special version for lyceum multiblog installations: http://blog.jodies.de/blog/get-recent-comments/lyceum/
* Supports Hannah Gray’s Profile Pics Plugin

You can download the plugin here : Get Recent Comments

It’s a snap to install, all you have to do is drop one file in your plugins directory and enable it in your dashboard and you’re good to go !!

Enjoy !!
Dave

Blog Post Wordpress Plugins

Posted in Wordpress Plugins by Dave on the July 27th, 2007

Wordpress Logo The one thing about Wordpress bloggers is that they’re always looking for new ways to extend thefunctionality of their blogs through or by using Wordpress Hacks. While I generally enjoy coding hacks for my blogs, occasionally I do enjoy finding new plugins. I’ve recently been on a quest to find some plugins to make one of my blogs more user friendly because the site is a viral Web 2.0 site that relies on visitors interactivity. In particular I was looking for a good Ajax based voting plugin so visitors could easily vote for their favorite posts or pictures on the blog (you can see it here LolDawgz) . In my search I stumbled across three excellent sources for the best free professional plugins, each one containing several offerings that are essential for any blogger who wishes to have more interactivity on their site. If you’re a Wordpress blogger, you might want to have a look at the following sites:

Top Wordpress Plugins at TheBlogJoint
This site is a listing of the absolute essential and best plugins available for Wordpress Junkies.

GaMerZ Wordpress Plugins
GaMerZ is a programmer who has coded some of the absolute best plugins available for Wordpress. His plugins are free and there are several great plugins such as WP-Polls, WP-Email and a fantastic plugn called WP-Ban which allows you to ban comments from people based on domain name, ip range, etc.

Alex King | Wordpres Plugins
Alex King ha a list of several great Wordpress plugins, my personal favorite being the “popularity contest” plugins which rates your posts based on factors that dictate user polularity.

Next time you’re looking for a sepcial plugin or if you’re just bored and trying to find new ways tomake your blog more user friendly, I highly recommend these three sites for all Wordpress enthusiasts.

Until next time, Happy Publishing !!!
