Can't say I disagree with him to be honest ... lol. But then again, think about his audience - magazine executives - his job is to make them feel important - what better way to do that than downplaying the immediate importance of the medium which will eventually replace them?

Well, i don't think "word of mouth" is still an useful way to market you website/blog.
The problem with internet is , if something is free, people will find ways to abuse it. Blogger is great for people to start writing about things they like. Not why do people create spam blogs with stolen content, basically because they want to rank higher in search engines and want more visitors. If word of mouth was sufficient, we wouldn't see a spam blog.

The spam blogs I was talking about are mostly MFA junk sites with no original content. They are cookie cutter sites that spammers use to draw any Adsense clicks they can from little or no effort.

As far as "word of mouth", it will always be the pinnacle of promoting any new site, product or idea. How do you think MySpace, FaceBook and Twitter became so popular? Surely not from PPC advertising or from setting up spammy blogspot blogs, Squidoo lenses, Hubpages or by spamming Craigslist.

As long as he does no evil he can say what he likes in my humble opinion.

And if he'd like to make sure the cream rises he would take a look at this site and put this blog in the number spot for affiliate programs :)

It is interesting that you bring up the AOL thing, I believe they just recently had a undercover team call to cancel an account and had a great deal of difficulty with it. As far as Google is concerned I love the company and what they are doing, not really a big fan of who is in charge but I still like the company.

I realize I'm late to this post, as I have not come across it until now, but you're implying that I think "the internet should become another closed media such as television or radio where only the voices of the rich and powerful are heard." That's absurd. But I do agree with Schmidt in that there is a lot of garbage on the Internet.

As far as Johns Wu (his name is Johns, not John) being a spammer is concerned, I don't know anything about that, and have not heard about it from other sources either.

As far as your inability to opt-out from iEntry mailings, I am not part of the support team that deals with this, but every mailing includes the ability to opt-out a variety of ways, such as the unsubscribe link, the suggestion of sending an email requesting to be unsubscribed, or you can simply call us and request to be unsubscribed, which someone here will be more than happy to do (in a timely fashion at that). Our number is easily located at the iEntry site, which is also linked to from each mailing.

I guess Google is interested in the best search results. So a lot of garbage is not good for them.

I get where he is coming from. Sure, the cesspool they were instrumental in creating may have originally contributed greatly to Google's bottom line, but long term the spam issues needs to be greatly curbed in order to provide us with a greater experience.
