Insights for Search is a fantastic tool released by Google that provides a wealth of search related data and information for internet marketers and SEO’s. Insights for Search allows you to easily compare search volume patterns across specific regions, categories, and time frames. The information provided in the search results is a goldmine for affiliates who might be running seasonal campaigns, geo-targeted campaigns or if you’re just looking for targeted keywords to add to an existing campaign.
As an example, let’s look at how Insights for Search could be used for a “Halloween Costumes” campaign. In this example, I’ve set the search to compare by search terms, entered “halloween costumes” as the search terms and set the search filter to Worldwide -> 2004-Present -> All Categories. Glancing at the screenshot below, we can see several useful bits of information that could be utilized in our campaign.

As you can see, search volume for “Halloween Costumes” starts rising in July and August and spikes in September and October each year with searches going flat in November. To the right of the traffic graph, you can see the leading news stories from each year which contain several keyword ideas such as WWE Halloween costumes, Divas Halloween costumes, fancy Halloween costumes and last-minute Halloween costumes.
All of this information could be saved for future use if you were planning on running the same campaign from year to year. On the other hand, if you’re doing SEO work for a website that is marketing costumes, the information can invaluable for optimizing pages for a seasonal spike in traffic.
If that’s not enough, Insights for Search also returns a wealth of related search terms as seen in the screenshot below.

Of particular interest might be the breakout search term “2008 halloween costumes” which doesn’t appear in the Google Adwords Keyword Tool because apparently Insights for Search has a hook into fresh, trending data that is not represented in the Adwords Tool. All of the other top 5 keywords are not found in the Adwords Tool as well, which shows that Insights for Search could be utilized by PPC marketers to get the latest keywords for their campaigns as well as organic SEO experts who want to setup longer term taps into Google search results.
While I’ve only touched on some of the most obvious uses for Insights for Search, you can see how this could be one of the coolest tools Google has ever released for both marketers and SEO’s alike. If you haven’t tried it already, visit the link below and give it a test run…

Great information. I can think of a lot of uses for this tool.
Why does Google make so many diff serp tools? I think they would be better to put all the tools into one location.
Nice post on using Google insights. This is the second post in recent days that I have seen about using Google insights. I am going to have to use it in my market research.
That looks like a great product. Is it free to try?
A fine looking product indeed, will have to give it a go some time.
That looks like a nice tool, I guess I have got to check it out! By the way, you have a nice blog design!
Another valuable tool from Google; personally I use them all and have fantastic results. And… it’s free! Hope it will stay that way.
wooow this is an amazing tool and importantly it is pull from Google’s search database.
Thank a lot for this great info.
This is a great tool. Has already helped for several of my campaigns.
Thank you, this is a brilliant tool and has helped me pull some keywords I had not imagined.
Great info and a great tool. Thank goodness its free also. Good stuff.
I’ve never understood the whole nofollow thing. People want you to comment on their blog, giving them free content, but are unwilling to give you something in return. Smacks of selfishness to me!
Hi, I am starting with affiliates and never thought about such a great tool. Thanks for that.
Excellent content…keep up the good work!
Thanks very much indeed for that information, Dave.
For seasonal products, such the halloween one, it would help new marketers in realising how soon they should begin marketing their product.
I’m going to look at how it can help with a free ebooks site for myself, although I am not the best at interpreting data.
Thanks again
Joe
Thanks Dave, I use this tool also, and you write about Insights for Search very clear
Google is still the best. Hope they still keep their slogan..”don’t be evil” by always provide useful tools like this one
Thanks for the post. I didn’t have this tool bookmarked, and I have a few terms I want to look up tonight. A lot of my niches are seasonal, so this definitely helps.
I agree, google still has most of the market. But I will definetly have a look at this tool.
Yea I have been using this tool with Google for ages now. It’s actually brought in most of my fastest online income.
I use this tool since it is available and I can’t say more than: great! It delivers plenty of useful information and is a great tool to choose your keywords. However, you won’t find niche keywords because they’re not showen (at least for German search results)
I have recently started my own blog and hopefully sometime in the very near future will be able to use it for affiliiate marketing. This tool sounds like something i will try out when that time comes.
Great work and many thanks.
In combination with the Adwords Keyword Tool this is great.
I am wondering why this was still hidden to me. I think this is as beneficial as Google Alerts(I love this tool until I discovered it) and I am going to bet that this is going to be another lovely Google Tool for me.
Thank you for an informational read. I’ve never even heard of Google Insights until now :p I’m definitely going to give it a try.
Thanks
Thanks so much for outlining this tool and the information about it. I had never heard of it but can see how useful it will be for advertising and some SEO. It continues to amaze me how many tools that google has and never seem to make them known. I don’t know why they don’t put these in the google labs section or something so they are easier to find out about.
Thanks for the article and tip!
