After nearly two decades of intense debate over a .xxx domain extension for adult sites, the extension has finally become a reality. Only time will tell if the extension finds widespread acceptance in the adult content community but one thing that might discourage adult webmasters from registering a .xxx domain is the $200 pricetag.
The extension is a sponsored top-level domain (sTLD) provided by ICM Registry of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Policy making for the new extendion has been tasked to the non-profit organization, The International Foundation for Online Responsibility (IFFOR).
The domain extension registration begins today, September 7, 2011 but it’s not open to everyone.

The ICM Registry today kicked off a sunrise period that lets trademark holders claim certain domains before .xxx is open to the public.
The 52-day effort is open until October 28 and will run on two tracks: Sunrise A is for those in the adult entertainment business; and Sunrise B is for those outside the industry who might not want to have their businesses associated with a porn-focused domain (disney.xxx, anyone?). Protecting those trademarks won’t be free, though. Each application will cost several hundred dollars, depending on the company with which you register. Go Daddy, for example, is charging a $209.99 one-time, non-refundable fee. A list of ICANN-accredited registrars is available on ICMRegistry’s site. |
35 companies from the adult industry worldwide were accepted into the .xxx Founders program. The group claimed approximately 1500 .XXX domain names after their business plans and development ideas were diligently scrutinized by the founders board.
One thing that’s not clear is if all adult sites will be required to exist on the new extension in the future. It certainly would be a good thing for parents trying to keep their children away from websites they shouldn’t be viewing and would greatly simplify parental controls for internet browsing.

The price is high…
On GoDaddy, you must pay $199,90 to get .xxx domain..
how much we must pay for this domains?
recently I have paid 20$ to .me domain extension but the domain extension apart from .com do not rank well. might be good for adult site but not for good seo site.
It is expensive and it is going to be easily filtered by search engines. Unless you are actually searching for smut, there is no way you will get ranked in the normal serps.
Our Government is operating so far outside of its design parameters that this type of discussion is futile. IMO the place to begin is eliminating tax which would force massive reductions in power and programs, bringing the govt. more in line with the founders structure. Only then can a discussion vis-a-vis federal and state govts. become worthwhile.
